I thought I was too mature to get all sorts of excited on The Walk of Fame. So when our out of town guest dragged us to Hollywood Boulevard, I made sure I had charged my phone in case I had to teleport to solitaire land.
I grew up in a media protected home and therefore often miss cultural references. I was not allowed to watch Silver Spoons or Family Ties or Growing Pains. When mom left on homemaking night, we seven kids flocked to the TV, trying to gleam as much as we could from the glowing box. Still, there are huge holes in my cultural knowledge and I have spent a lot of my adult life watching bad 80s movies and TV, trying to catch up. But I have a confession: I have yet to see Top Gun, Ghost or Jurassic Park. Shhh! Don't tell.
So going to Hollywood Boulevard could have been just like another "Have you seen this?" "What about this?" "Didn't you love this?" conversations where I'm the dumb, odd one out.
Nick at Night came to TV and I was allowed to watch whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, no questions asked. I watched Donna Reed, Patty Duke and Mary Tyler Moore. When the boys headed off to scout camp, my mom and I watched every classic we could get from Sounds Easy. Turns out, I am more likely to know who was who in Hollywood in 1955 than in 1985.
I got a little Hollywood horny walking down the Boulevard and finding my favorite classic stars. When we got to Natalie Wood, it was time to take a picture because she is the most beautiful star to ever make it to the big screen.
