The Ph.D Results

Letter to Charles from Melanie:

dear dear charles!

you will be receiving an official letter soon, but i wanted to let you know you have been accepted with great joy & enthusiasm to our MFA program. we have NO $$ to offer MFA candidates this year because of budget crisis, but we are all delighted to think you may be joining us.

we were only able to accept 2 PhD students in fiction this year (again, because of funding--we can't take UN-funded PhD students). fiction writers recommended erica (highly), but graduate committee chose the final candidates in all fields. she was not one of the two selected. i am sorry our funds are so limited.

would she consider applying for MFA? if so, i think there's another opportunity to apply in april for unfunded positions. (call GERRI MACKEY 581.7131 for details on this.)

we would love to have you BOTH with us.

blessings & joy,

melanie

Letter to Melanie from Charles:

Thank you so much for letting me know. We will be having a bittersweet date night tonight. We wanted to come to your reading last week. I even changed some other plans only to realize I had the time wrong. Thank you for your letter and support. And the blessings.

Sincerely,

Charles

Letter to Charles and me from Melanie:

Dear Charles & Erica,

We so wanted to accept you both! Erica, please know you have great fans here. And if you do wish to apply for MFA in April, you should let us know.

I'll be off e-mail for the next 12 days.

Blessings to both of you!

Letter to Charles from Francois:

Hey Charlie
I'll be there, but I'll be teaching half time because I'm going on a 3 year phased retirement, so you're right not to trust the schedule.
I'm really sad that we didn't manage to get Erica admitted. The writers recommended her but the grad. committee didn't agree. In all fairness, though, this is a very tight year because of budget cuts. I'm looking forward to working with you next year.
best
francois

Official Letter to me from graduate studies:

Dear Ms. Plummer:

I regret to inform you that the Graduate Studies Committee, having carefully reviewed your file, has not recommended your admission to the English Graduate Program in Creative Writing/Fiction. We appreciate your interest in the University of Utah and wish you success in your academic and professional endeavors.

Congrats Charles!
And Erica, you are a wonderful writer (lots of praise in those letters). Keep it up.
Budget Cuts Suck!

It's an epistolary short story! I love it. You know you can pretty well do what you want, don't you?
