The Help

I'm into a book again, just like the good old teenage days when I read for no other reason than sheer pleasure. This comes after trudging through a YA novel where there were, I swear, fifteen "as" constructions on every page; I wanted to die, every page was painful, and it reminded me of my early undergraduate workshop days when none of us knew how to write. I got through it in the same amount of time it took Maxwell to read a gazillion books. He kept asking me, "How long does it take you to read, Mom?" Apparently forever.

I'm coming late to The Help party. Everyone at the gym, on facebook, and in the ward have already read it. It reminds me of the time when we all read Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons. It's so nice when we are all reading the same thing...like a worldwide bookgroup. Southern writers, you bring me to my knees.

The movie comes out August 10th. I think a girls night is in order. Drop a line if you want to come.

Also, I think I must post a discussion about the character Hilly once I'm done with the book. Are any of you haunted by the duality of her character? I am. You know, how one can be wicked and wonderful all at the same time.

'til later!
