Today I finished my Doris book. This is an art-journal ala Chantel-style. Doris is my my late grandmother, and this book is an attempt to both archive and celebrate her life. Tomorrow I am giving the book to my Dad, and I will miss working and looking at the pages. I love my grandma more because of this project. She spent her life loving with her hands, just as my Dad does now. Doris could make a dying horse live, could start a fire, could swim rivers, worked as a single mom, made zucchini and date bread. She drank diet coke. She smoked and blamed it on the guy downstairs. She bought my Dad a pony, and chicks for the kids on Easter, she had dogs. And I see Doris in myself, the best and the worst, the fire, the drive, the gardens, the animals, the tendency to cuss, to lose temper... And still I am okay because Grandma was.
