Date Night

On Saturday morning, I rolled over and told Charles that he should take me to dinner and then prom so I could spy on my students.

We started at Bruges. We each had a waffle and shared a machine gun sandwich; the cafe overlooks Pioneer Park which was pretty in the rain. I asked Charles what he thought each of our children needed most. And mainly, he thought the same thing as me.

At Tom and Louise's we discussed our current viruses, our students, and our anxieties. Tom gave me cough drops which I ate like candy and Louise asked if she acted please with herself and I said "Yes, but you are funny and full of self-loathing so I guess not really."

Then we went to the State Capital and spied on my students and Harrison. Some ran to me and wanted to meet Charles, some hid, and I soaked it all up. The girls were beautiful, but that is expected. I have NEVER seen the guys look so cleaned up. So impressive when they have brushed their teeth, combed their hair, and shaved.

Two girls won the Mrs. Plummer dress contest. Amberlee wore a mint dress with an intriguing lace pattern. Her date was a boy who is deaf and they signed the whole night. Cute. The other winner was Emily. I don't have a favorite student. But if I did, it would be Emily.  She was the only girl with a dress that had a pattern to it--a long silk cream dress with large abstract flowers. She wore her hair down (and if you have Emily's hair, you should never put it up). She smiled the whole night just like she does at school. The special-ed kids were there and they looked radiant in their dresses and tux's. Mrs. Albers and I had a little moment where we gooed over how cute special-ed kids are.

We made our way to Anne and Spencer's who were doing their taxes. I laughed at Spencer who was so sick of numbers he had to hold a hammer. Anne and Charles worked through the tax-math only to find that Spencer was right all along.

Justice.

We drove home in the rain, listening to Garrison Keillor as if we were old.

Garrison Keillor is for the "old"? It's sad when I don't know how old I am.
