I quit Facebook because it made me sad. Not because people have better lives than me; I love my world and am genuinely happy for people who have wonderful lives. If others have better vacations, sushi dinners, and friends it just means the world is a wonderful place and I'm lucky to live in it. Mainly, Facebook took too much time and stopped being fun. Also, I was so tired of navigating and hearing all the ultra-conservatism coming from my neighbors and friends. The gun discussions? Oh my gosh. I heard an argument on FB saying Jesus would support guns. Really? I'm all for a hearty discussion about gun rights, but wasn't Jesus the one who said "turn the other cheek" and told Peter to "put away thy sword"? Doesn't it say in the Book of Mormon that the people were wicked when they loved their weapons? If we are going to bring Jesus into the gun discussion, can we at least quote him correctly?
I started hiding people--anyone who said something political, anyone who was trying to sell me something, and all I was left with was "We made Brownies!" or "I'm so sick of rain!" Seriously, I was spending twenty minutes a day listening to this crap.
I went to Hawaii for two weeks and didn't check Facebook the whole time. When I got back, I read the feed, thought it was dumb, and hit delete.
Thank goodness. Whew.
