Tom Had a Birthday!

Presents: A sweater from Target, a hand-scrawled poem on a sacrament program, a letter (hand-written, with colored pencils highlights).

Cake: Raspberry Almond Tort -- Market Street Grill

Attendees: Tom, Louise, Janie, Rian, Emily (surprise!), Anne, Spencer, Erica, Charles, Harrison, Maxwell, Mira

It was Tom's birthday, yet somehow I came away with two gifts of the very best sort. T & L secretly invited my friend Emily from my masters program. She showed up at their ward earlier that day and upon making the connection invited her to Tom's party. What joy! In my own small way, I think Emily was answer to prayer--because I have been asking God, "What is my happiness?" (knowing full well that my happiness is a creative life but bugging God about it anyway). Emily is connected to my creative life--together we inspire, discusses language, hope, and beauty each time we are together. I was also happy that my Anne got to meet Emily since I had spoken about her countless times. My second gift, (is it always about me?) was a painting Louise had done of Mira. Breathtaking, I tell you. Breathtaking. We both agreed it would look wonderful in a gold frame.

Tom said not even to bother with the candles. Hell no! we said. Rian found matches in her bathroom and we scavenged for candles. Charles placed the candles in a perfect circle like a graphic designer would. We sang happy birthday badly but with cheer.

Janie showed up. Janie is the sexiest 60 something alive. If I could age like Janie I'd do it today. She hugged Max, he squirmed, we laughed, she hugged him again.

Spencer laughed.

Anne studied her book and poked her head out whenever silliness arose.

The conversation turned to Ted Bundy and sociopaths and psychopaths until the children's faces were stricken.

Rian and I discussed The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Its Brilliance.

We went home too late and sorted out our coming week.

Happy Birthday, Tom! We heart heart heart heart heart you!

Such a fun night! And Emily was wonderful. It was so fun to have her there. Nothing like cake and sociopaths.

Looks wonderful! Also thanks for mentioning (briefly) your opinion of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I was intrigued by the preview but wasn't sure if it was going to actually be any good. I'll definitely add it to my movie list.

Erica, I heart heart heart you and all the rest of you--every last one. Thank you for bringing so much joy. Thank you Charles for putting candles on the cake Thank you one and all. I have just one question: There seems to be a very ald man at the party. Can you tell me who he is?
