Grand Canyon

Charles and I love to drive through the night so we can own the road and drive the fastest route from point A to point B. We also really like stars and owls. The idea is we share in the sleeping and driving and get an extra day of vacation. Last night I opted to sit in the middle of the back seat of our van. I didn't sleep at all. When we rolled into the Grand Canyon, I grabbed my sleeping bag, set it on the parking lot curb and slept until morning. I missed the sunrise (which Charles and Harrison stayed up to watch). I thought I was smiling when we took this picture. But instead I look pissed, and I am afraid that looking pissed is my new neutral. (Raising teenagers is killing me.) The Grand Canyon was vastly beautiful. Pink. Gray. Purple. Orange. When the light changed it was as if I was looking at a completely different canyon. Always different. I believe the wild can heal. Just hasn't gotten to me yet.

It is one of my favorite places in the world. Don't miss the sunset. You will never forget it.

Ahem. Teenagers are killing you? I'd like to think that I am already raised as I am leaving the house in 18 days. You mean the teenager is killing you.

My dear, you look sad and disconnected as if you have walked from Salt Lake City to the Grande Canyon alone.

Maybe this is the theme for your vacation: disconnected sadness. Aloneness, desertion, followed by renewal, justification and the love of friends and family.
