Over Broccoli Soup

Louise, Olivia, Me

So Louise had Olivia and I up for lunch. She made good broccoli soup. Louise and Olivia are both published authors. Louise taught creative writing at BYU and Olivia teaches creative writing at NYU. Before I showed up Louise informed me that one of the discussion topics at lunch would be my writing career. It came up briefly...they told me things like this: in order to get a book of short stories published I should have a novel too. I knew this piece of information. Then Louise and Olivia started talking about all the writers they know. The advance so and so got. What whosiewhatsit is working on. Who got reviewed in the New York Times. This made me feel very hopeful. There are real people all over who are writing and publishing and there is no reason to think I wouldn't someday be one of them.

What sort of novel would you write?

That looks like a group of women I'd love to have lunch with.

When I first started writing seriously I was nineteen. I told my mom I wanted to publish, but I wasn't sure because I knew it was so competitive. She told me to go stand in the book store and look around. If all those people published a book, why shouldn't I?

It was a powerful thought. One I'm glad you have.

(Also I lurk on your blog. Hi.)

Also, I would love to see you sometime soon, too. What does your time look like these days?
