So I just finished calling both my kids schools, and am now calling the school district to ask, "Why in the heck did you not play the Obama speech?"
Jr. High said that in fact, they would be playing it in all Social Studies classes until all students have seen it. Okay, fine. Not ideal, but whatever. That works.
Then I called the elementary school. Here's how it went down at that school. Parents FLIPPED OUT about the Obama speech so the school decided not to play it, but if your kids is say a "special liberal", a parent could pull him/her out of school and take him to the media center where there were 10 other kids watching the speech.
We didn't even get the memo.
Barf Me!
I called Charles and told him I want to move. Far, far, away.

It's killing me! Heaven forbid we let our President encourage our kids to work hard and stay in school. What a joke.
The parents missed a good opportunity to let kids watch the speech and come home and have a discussion about personal responsibility and the role of government.
unfortunately this situation reminds me of one of my all time favorite quotes "We must preserve freedom of the mind in the church and resist all efforts to suppress it. The church is not so much concerned with whether the thoughts of its members are orthodox or heterodox as it is that they shall have thoughts." - Hugh B. Brown
Wow. That's incredible. I hear you. I desperately hope we are not living in Utah when my kids are old enough to understand they live in a bubble.
Ridiculous. But please, stay in Utah with the rest of us special ones and one day maybe, just maybe, the
President of the United States will be able to speak to our children about hard work, social responsibility, and setting goals. Maybe. Right? Please, please, let me be right!
And Ryan, what a great quote.
We got notes sent home about the speech and that we could have our kids excluded from watching it if we wanted to. I am not an Obama fan, but I am willing to give him a chance. And I thought it was awful that we had to give permission for our kids to listen to it. I read the speech and I thought it was excellent. And I talked to my kids when they got home and asked them what they thought about it. I think Ryan is right a lot of people missed out.
Hmm, why did I really leave Daybreak?
Why didn't they just show the speach at primetime, so the kids and parents could watch together and discuss?
FYI - Daybreak was the only school in this area that even made the speech available to students (although a lame attempt). Other elem. schools (ie. Eastlake, Monte Vista, Midas Creek, Butterfield Canyon) didn't even offer it. They sent nothing home to the parents. They pretty much ignored it.
These schools didn't receive phone calls from parents who were mad that their student didn't get to see it. I find it interesting that the majority of phone calls that Daybreak Elem. received in favor of the speech were from Daybreak residents. There are definitely more liberal parents in Daybreak than the surrounding area. This info. came from the community council meeting I attended on Wednesday.
