Long-Billed Curlew

The Great Backyard Bird Count is in. These are the results for Utah. My favorite bird, the long-billed curlew, is not listed because the curlew is not here in February. But, come June, there should be plenty of Curlews nesting at the bird refuge. I am amazed by how many birds I do know on this list, after only three short years of studying birds, and I am also amazed by how many I would definitely not be able to spot in the wild. I hope some year soon I can know enough about birds to participate in the great backyard bird count.

Ok Erica, we need to go on Saturday morning with March 21st with Mr. Webb on one of his Bean-museum-sponsored birding outings http://mlbean.byu.edu/home/Events/Nature_Exp.aspx. I'm serious too, Kristen works, and I've been wanting to go for a long time. You in?

By the way we saw bald eagles in Provo Canyon on Saturday. I couldn't get over how massive they are.

Miss Magpie, I loved going through googling pictures of a lot of those birds. Turns out I've seen a lot of them... and also not a lot. I was in the canyon on Saturday too! Where were the eagles??!!

We bird watched when we lived in SC. Maybe we need to start again. I had no idea.

Spencer, I saw one about 1/4 a mile past the turn off to Sundance perched in a large leafless tree on the opposing side of the Provo river. Two weeks ago we saw 7 or 8 across Deer Creek (we were on the Heber Creeper so they were easier to see). I don't know how long they are here since but check it out. Apparently I'm not the only one that saw that bald eagle in the tree...http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/directory/UT.html
