Obama Mamas

Several years ago I sat on a soccer field with fellow moms. We watched our daughters practice for an upcoming soccer game. We talked about America, and how there used to be a ring to it, that when we were kids we were proud to call ourselves Americans, that freedom and justice meant something, that America was special. I can't remember which right was being taken away that week. Was it our right to talk on the phone, to vote and have it count, the right of prisoners to expect humane treatment, to have a fair discussion before sending American's sons to war, was it the week Bush used shakey intelligence to convince all of America to go to war? This was a dark time for us soccer moms and my friend Wanda (who I loved because she took in Bosnian Refugees) said, "America will go on, but our children won't know what a special place this was, they will think what we have now is normal." I felt sick.

I am proud today of every American that voted. I'm proud of the Americans who think that freedom, justice, liberty and happiness are the most important things. You give me hope. And for my kids, an America that rings.

I'm hoping that America isn't done yet. I have my fingers crossed.

The change is exciting, and hope sure runs deep in New York.
